Where to file an insurance complaint

Insurance is regulated state by state. When an insurer denies a claim, underpays, cancels or non-renews you, or raises your premium in a way you think is unfair, the formal place to push back is your state insurance department — not the insurer. A complaint filed there goes on the public record and generally obligates the company to respond to the regulator in writing, usually within a few weeks.

What to expect:

• You describe the problem and attach documents — your policy, the denial or rate-change letter, and any correspondence.
• The department forwards your complaint to the insurer and asks for a written explanation.
• Regulators can’t practice law or force a payout on a genuine coverage dispute, but they do check the company followed its policy language and state law — and many complaints get resolved once the insurer knows the state is watching.
• Most states let you file online; all take complaints by phone or mail. Use the state where the policy was issued or where you live.
